E3 2016: Batman Gets In On This Whole VR Thing

The thing about superhero games is, it’s damn hard to live up to the hype. Trailers will spout boastful BS like Be Superman, and it sounds awesome. Because, let’s be frank, when the Son of Krypton isn’t being murdered by Ben Affleck waving around a hunk of kryptonite on a stick, he’s pretty damn cool. The flight, the eye lasers, the general badassery, what’s not to like?

Superman is a boss, and we expect to feel like one when we play as him in games. Then you bust out Superman 64, and you’re flying through rings like it’s Baby’s First Flight Sim. That’s some intergalactic injustice right there.

Be the Batman, on the other hand, is a promise that several titles have managed to live up to. Whether you’re a fan of the character or not, you can’t deny that the Arkham titles are pretty damn good action games in their own right.

Which is all well and good, but didn’t you get the memo? We’re shoehorning freaking VR into everything right now. It’s time to redefine what it means to be the bat, with Batman: Arkham VR, due for release this October.

If this brief E3 reveal is anything to go by, the game’s going to involve a lot of mood lighting and staring at extreme close-ups of Batman’s suit, while the Joker talks smack at you in the background. Sounds like a winner to me.
