Turns Out George Lucas Was Working on a New Star Wars Trilogy a Year Before Disney Bought Lucasfilm

If you're like me, you groaned when you heard last year that Disney was buying Lucasfilm and was going to crank out yet another trilogy of Star Wars films—not because you wouldn't love a new trilogy of Star Wars films, but because you assumed at the time it would probably suck. However, when it was announced that J.J. Abrams would direct the next film in the space opera—again, if you're like me—you probably thought, well, okay, it might not be so bad. (Excessive lens flares aside.) And if that is the case, then you're really going to be glad Disney bought Lucasfilm when you hear this next bit of news: according to an inside source, George Lucas was working on a new trilogy up to a year prior to selling the whole thing to Disney.

No, really. If Disney hadn't come along and bought the franchise from him, we would have been subjected to yet another round of Gungans, schmaltzy dialogue, and complicated plots hinged upon on the bureaucratic minutiae of the Imperial Senate. So it turns out that Disney and J.J. Abrams actually did us a favor by saving Star Wars from it's long-past-his-prime creator.

So who was this inside source that supplied this interesting bit of information? Why, it was none other than George's son, Jett Lucas. He sat down for an interview with Flicks and the City recently and dished some of what he knows about the new trilogy. You can watch the interview in its entirety below, but here's the crucial part:

We knew probably a year prior (to the purchase) he had started writing and king of researching, starting his whole little process. About half way through that process was when the idea of selling to Disney came up... I knew that he was very torn on the matter, he was like a kid who had turned 18 and was ready to leave the house. Every parent has wanted to let their children go, but they want to hold on to you.

I don't know about you, but I'm relieved. I'll take lens flares over Jar Jar Binks any day of the week.
