How Much Are You Worth to Facebook?

The numbers are pretty funny, if you think about it. A survey that Netpop conducted recently in light of Facebook's impending IPO filing showed that 42% of users are "uneasy" about the information they're sharing on the social network. Tim Berners-Lee, who's credited for inventing the Internet, even weighed in on the privacy issues that people face online, telling them to demand for their data from the likes of Facebook, Twitter, and Google.

All this fuss about privacy and data requests give people the impression that their information is probably worth a ton of money. But an online tool by privacy firm Abine called the Val-You Calculator is indicating otherwise.

Warning: ‘Get Your Free 5,000 Facebook Credits!’ Offer is a Scam

Facebook

Users of Facebook, beware. Following the now-infamous 'I Just Got My Hillbilly Name!' and Get Free Oakleys Facebook scams is another one that's just as obnoxious, annoying, and dangerous.

Back in 2009, the world's largest social network tried to make some extra bucks with their Facebook Credits virtual currency. Users can buy these credits using real money in order to buy virtual goods for use in various Facebook games and apps. These credits aren't the hottest thing for many users on Facebook, but it's hot enough to be on the radar of cybercriminals who are now using it in a new scam.

Will Liking On Facebook Get You Fired?

When you click on the Like book on your Facebook account you probably don't think much about the consequences that it might have on your career. After all, unless you are surfing at work, your company should not care about what you Like, or don't like. Right?

That would be the decent thing to do, but apparently if you work for Sheriff B.J. Roberts, or someone like him, then you may want to watch what you like, or at least put all of your settings to private. Mr. Roberts choose to fire six of his workers after they had the audacity to ..... wait for it...... Like the Facebook page of the person running against him for his office. He stated at the time that they had, "hindered the harmony and efficiency of the office," according to the information on the suit.

If that sounds like BS to you, as it is unlikely that anyone would have even noticed the activity is six people were not put out of job because of it, then sadly you are alone. When five of the employees put their constitutionally protected free speech they were shot down by the judge.

The honorable Judge Raymond A. Jackson, of the Federal District Court wrote a ruling that says that liking a page is not protected speech. His reasoning was that liking was not sufficient to qualify as speech. In the ruling he said, "Simply liking a Facebook page is insufficient... It is not the kind of substantive statement that has previously warranted constitutional protection." So its not enough speech to be protected but it is enough to get your fired.

Sounds like a point of law that needs some tweaking.

While the ruling is likely to be contested, and taken to the Supreme Court in time, likely with the help of several free speech advocacy groups. So the ruling may, in time, be overturned.

UK’s Nightclub Scene: No Facebook ID, No Entry

Facebook ID

Bouncers routinely check the IDs of party goers before they're allowed to step into the club so that they can keep the underaged ones out. They're apparently starting to get tired of getting duped with fake IDs, because they're now asking people to provide further proof by also showing their Facebook profile at the door.

This was revealed by BBC Newsbeat when several people wrote about it on the news program's Facebook wall.

Are You One of 13 Million Facebook Users With Unchanged Privacy Settings?

Over the last few years, Facebook has come under fire for privacy policies and settings that leave much to be desired. This has even led Tim Berners-Lee, the man credited for inventing the Internet, to encourage users to demand for their data from leading social networks, including Facebook.

If you create a profile on the site, then it's your responsibility to tweak your settings and protect the information that you've willingly posted on your profile. And if this is something that you're unaware of, then you might be one of an estimated 13 million users who haven't tweaked their Facebook settings to protect their privacy.
