Arguably the best and only redeeming thing about 2016's otherwise abysmal Suicide Squad was Margot Robbie's unhinged performance as Harley Quinn. It's nice to see her as the one surviving element from that film that carries over into the new DC flick impossibly titled Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).
Robbie's character is, of course, front and center in this new trailer for the film and the first we've gotten to date that gives any sort of indication as to the film's plot. It seems that Harley has split with Jared Leto's insufferable take on the Joker and is looking for a new lover. She apparently finds one in the form of Ewan McGregor's Roman Sionis, aka Black Mask, but that goes sour when he puts a hit out on Harley. She must then team up with Mary Elizabeth Winstead's Huntress, Jurnee Smolett-Bell's Black Canary, and Rosie Perez's Renee Montoya to take down his criminal empire.
It's not the worst idea anyone's ever had for a movie, especially a comic book movie, and now that DC has finally found its footing thanks to a series of fun flicks like Aquaman and Shazam, this certainly seems to represent their new direction. Birds of Prey flies into theaters on February 7.
