Mark Hamill Had to Beg Rian Johnson to Include this Moment in ‘The Last Jedi’

When you're trying to steer a gigantic ship like Star Wars—where characters who have less screen time than the Lucasfilm logo are beloved by entire swaths of the population—you're likely to forget about connections between some characters. Take The Last Jedi writer and director Rian Johnson for example. He made sure to give Luke a moment with Chewie, one with R2, another with Yoda, and of course the big one at the end with Leia. However, he totally neglected Luke's relationship with C3P0, who had been at his side from the moment they met in Star Wars until Luke went off to Dagobah in Empire.

In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight—via ComicBookMovie—Hamill tries to show what a great collaborator Rian Johnson was by telling a story about how Johnson totally neglected Luke's connection to Threepio...

“Initially, I didn't acknowledge Threepio, I walked right past him. I said, 'Rian, look it, after all those years of service, even though we haven't been in contact in recent years, Threepio was the closest to a sidekick I had. Harrison had Chewie and I had Artoo and Threepio, but [Rian's] so accommodating and so collaborative. He said, 'Oh, absolutely, you should go over there.' We didn't really have time to script anything, just to acknowledge him, and that's what I did.”

I think it's great that the ultimate point of the story is that Johnson was flexible enough to allow for such a moment he hadn't planned on, but to block Hamill to just walk past Threepio without even acknowledging him? Bad form. Thank goodness that Hamill was able to come up with that wink as it gave me probably my favorite moment in The Last Jedi.

I know Lucasfilm probably wishes that Mark Hamill would keep his mouth shut, but he's the best ambassador this franchise has at the moment. Now that Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher are no longer talking Star Wars, Hamill's the only guy you've got on the inside who's gonna tell it like it is.
