New York Giants Rookie RB David Wilson Claims He Will Make the Pro Football Hall of Fame

Oh boy. Sometimes athletes just say things the wrong way. David Wilson is a rookie running back for the New York Giants who was selected 32nd overall, which is in the first round. Wilson has the ability and talent to be a very good player. But if you ask him, he has more than that.

"I think at the end of my career, I'll be in the Hall of Fame," Wilson told Newsday's Bob Glauber. "I know myself and I know (when) I have guys around me that feel the same way, which I feel I do. When I get my opportunity, the sky is not the limit. I think it's past it. You have to believe in yourself to do good things. This is how I feel."

Apparently his offensive coordinator rolled his eyes when told of Wilson's words. Professional athletes have to have a certain cockiness, that's just the way it is. You can't compete with the best unless you think you belong there. But Wilson just really screwed himself with that quote.

First of all, he's barely playing. Wilson has 15 carries for 87 yards ON THE SEASON. And 40 of those came on one run, an impressive run, but that tends to skew things. Take that one carry away, and his per rush average goes from 5.8 to 3.35. That's not Canton material.

Secondly, if he's Hall of Fame bound, wouldn't that mean he'd be so good right now that the Giants would have to be playing him? He got in early in the first game of the year, fumbled the ball and then apparently let some tears flow on the sideline. You gotta be tougher than that, rook.

Not only does that look bad, it probably didn't help Tom Coughlin keep any trust in the young guy. Wilson didn't get another carry that night, so make your own judgement. They gave him a shot in the opening week and he's had 14 carries since. And guess how his comment will go over the next time a vet tackles his ass. He's never going to hear the end of it.

Maybe this was just Wilson's way of keeping himself pumped up in what has to be a pretty disappointing rookie season so far. When you get picked in the first round as a running back and then barely see the field, that's probably pretty humbling. Self doubt can start seeping in and really mess a guy up.

I have nothing against Wilson, but if he's going to be proclaiming he's a Hall of Famer he needs to hold onto the ball, stop crying in the middle of games, and I don't know, pick up some yards maybe.
