Because ‘Tetris: The Movie’ Isn’t A Dumb Idea At All

As we know, video games have a pretty damn craptacular record with movies. Whether it's Bob Hoskins' Super Mario Bros, Uwe ‘Boll-ocks' Boll's horrific movie adaptions or Pixels, there have been more disasters than I care to think about.

Still, intrepid directors keep trying. Adam Sandler may be sitting this one out, but it's a doozy of an idea: A Tetris origins story.

Now, sure, you don't often hear the words Tetris and story in the same sentence. Not without the words has no effin' in the middle there. The iconic puzzler is completely bereft of plotting of any sort, of course, and wouldn't make the most exciting bedtime story. Once upon a time, some funky-shaped bricks fell from the sky. Repeatedly. The end.

So, as origin stories go, I'm not expecting thrills, gunshots and explosions to rival, say, Batman Begins or the first Iron Man film. Instead, we're talking something like that recent Grand Theft Auto TV drama with Daniel Radcliffe.

Here's GamesRadar with the skinny:

‘ X-Men: The Last Stand and Rush Hour director Brett Ratner is on production duties for a Tetris movie about the life of Russian designer Alexey Pajitnov. Pajitnov was working as a computer programmer in 1984 when he made the blocky wonder but due to the fact that he ceded his rights to the game to the government, he didn't make any money from it until the '90s. Plenty of juicy biopic material.'

One for the nerdly retro-heads, all in all.
