E3 2016: Is ‘Quake Champions’ Quake Just Like Mama Used To Make?

  So here it is, Ego-gents. E3 2016 has officially descended, hitting us all with ten tons of gaming knowledgetastic straight to the happy parts. Let’s get into that coverage. 

The FPS genre is a funny beast. Over the years, different trends have come and gone, like the tedious browner-than-brown days of the Medal of Honor-style World War Two shooter. Just now, we’re right in the middle of the make-everything-futuristic-and-as-goddamn-space-y-as-possible phase. Nerdly science dudes call these paradigm shifts, but I won’t because it’s way too early on a Monday morning to blow your minds with smartassery like that.

In the earlier days, the arena shooter ruled all. Doom and Quake and such centered around map control, knowing where the pickups would spawn (back in my day, buddy boy, we had no regenerating health) and that sort of deal. The new Doom didn’t really revive this style too well, it was a little too Halo, but here comes Quake again.

Yup. We haven’t seen much from the series in a long time, but we’ve just been given a fresh from E3 2016 ogle at Quake Champions. I’m sure a lot of us will be pissed about the whole champions thing (different characters with different playstyles, a la Overwatch), the way gamers are with change, but still. Quake.

Was that a melee kill with a circular saw type thing I saw at the end there? Yes, yes it was.
