There are certain things you just don’t change about a game series. They’re its trademark, they make it what it is. What would Super Mario be without cutesy-ass colourful platforming action? Nothing, that’s what. Where would Pokémon be without freakish mutant wildlife to catch, enslave and force to battle? Nowhere my butt wants to go, that’s for damn sure.

When it comes to Gears of War, there’s a whole list of stuff you can pretty well take as a given. Big ol’ studly dudes, big ol’ studly guns, lumpen alien things to chainsaw into two pieces, horde mode, all of that good stuff. That is Gears of War, right there. That’s kinda its whole thing. But maybe it won’t always be.

Down Australia way, Xbox boss Phil Spencer and head Gears of War 4 creative director Chuck Osieja hit the stage at the Xbox Fanfest event. They had a couple potentially-intriguing info-nuggets to share regarding the series’ future.

As Game Spot reports, one question put to the pair was ‘If Gears of War could expand into any other gaming genre, what would it be?’

‘Definitely when we got the team together and talked about the future of Gears of War,’ Spencer answered, ‘I think there’s multiple ways that you can tell that story. Multiple gameplay genres. I think it’s a really big IP and it’s an IP that could exist in linear form, in books… in different gaming genres.’

Nothing but the vaguest-ass hints, there, but I’m sure it’s a big deal that Spencer immediately told Osieja to be careful what he said when they fielded the question. After all the Gears of War 4 hypetastic had died down, we might be seeing something a little more unusual from Gears. Hit the link for more from the duo.
