Any way you slice it, Steven Spielberg seems like both the best and worst possible choice to direct an adaptation of Ernest Cline's pop culture mash-up masterpiece Ready Player One. On one hand, he's responsible for at least 20% of the pop culture properties referenced in the book, but on the other hand, his tendency toward the sentimental doesn't quite fit the source material.

Putting all of that aside for a moment, this first trailer looks absolutely insane. The reworking of Willy Wonka's classic "Pure Imagination" coupled with the non-stop pop culture references is more than any of the book's fans could have hoped for. The stacks look just like I pictured them, and Parzival's souped up DeLorean looks fantastic in action. It's also a great tease as Tye Sheridan's Wade Watts/Parzival is the only main character introduced. That means they're keeping some great characters under wraps for now, including the amazing Ben Mendelsohn as the villainous Nolan Sorrento.

Back to Spielberg, though, has any director ever been simultaneously perfect and too on-the-nose at the same time? I'll leave that to you guys to suss out, I'm just gonna watch the trailer again and pick out all the stuff I missed the first time. Ready Player One hits theaters on March 30, 2018.
