‘Moonlight’ Director Reveals Gorgeous First Trailer for His Next Film ‘If Beale Street Could Talk’ (VIDEO)

After Moonlight literally wrestled the Best Picture Oscar away from La La Land, cinephiles the world over have been eagerly awaiting the follow-up from its director, Barry Jenkins. With today being the birthday of author and activist James Baldwin (I Am Not Your Negro), Jenkins has unveiled his first look at his upcoming adaptation of Baldwin's book If Beale Street Could Talk.

As reported by Variety last July...

"the story follows Tish, a newly engaged Harlem woman who races against the clock to prove her lover’s innocence while carrying their first-born child. It is a celebration of love told through the story of a young couple, their families and their lives, trying to bring about justice through love, for love and the promise of the American dream."

In that same article, Jenkins said that he has been trying to adapt the book since 2013...

“James Baldwin is a man of and ahead of his time; his interrogations of the American consciousness have remained relevant to this day,” Jenkins said. “To translate the power of Tish and Fonny’s love to the screen in Baldwin’s image is a dream I’ve long held dear. Working alongside the Baldwin Estate, I’m excited to finally make that dream come true.”

Could we be looking at another showdown between Jenkins and La La Land's Damien Chazelle at next year's Oscars? The latter is releasing First Man in October, setting the stage for a rematch with Jenkins. Whether or not you liked Moonlight, you must admit that it was an absolutely gorgeous film that looked stunning, and this looks to be no different.

If Beale Street Could Talk opens in limited release on November 30.
