A Director You’ve Never Heard of Might Make a ‘Star Wars’ Movie

While we may have thought that Disney would continue cranking out a Star Wars movie a year for the rest of time, currently Solo: A Star Wars Story and Episode IX are the only Star Wars movies announced that have not yet been released. Rumors have swirled of an Obi-Wan spinoff, but no actual traction has been made, at least according to Ewan McGregor.

Beyond that, no one's sure what the future of Star Wars holds, but we know that Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm have met with one director about potentially helming a Star Wars flick. According to The Hollywood Reporter, cinematographer turned director Reed Morano has taken the proverbial "meeting" with Kennedy and though her report of the incident is light on details, it all started when the mega producer saw the three Morano-directed episodes of Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale...

"I guess she was watching with her daughter and then called people and was like, 'Who's this Reed person?' She probably thought I was a guy because of my name," says Morano of her two-and-a-half-hour sit-down with the Lucasfilm president. "She's amazing. We're talking about adventure movies, and I'm not even remembering that she produced Goonies. Any movie that I put my finger on that I loved when I was growing up was a movie that she produced. Anyway, it was a great meeting. Obviously, I can't say anything about what else we were talking about."

In case you're wondering about Morano's credentials, she's got over fifty credits to her name as a cinematographer, has directed two features—Meadowland and I Think We're Alone Now, the latter of which premieres at Sundance soon—and has helmed episodes of Billions and Halt and Catch Fire in addition to her work on Handmaid's Tale.

It's a simple fact of life that we need more female directors doing genre pictures, and seeing someone like this get a shot at a huge franchise would be great. I guess there's no way of knowing if someone from the indie circuit will bring a film to completion as Rian Johnson did, or get the boot like Josh Trank, Lord & Miller, and Colin Trevorrow? Only time will tell.
