20th Century Fox's original plan for the Alien franchise was for Ridley Scott to direct Prometheus 2, then executive produce another Alien film directed by Neill Blomkamp and set somewhere in between the events of Prometheus 2 and those of the original 1979 sci-fi masterpiece.

Unfortunately, things didn't turn out that way. Ridley Scott couldn't make up his mind about what he wanted to do with Prometheus 2, so Fox had to put Blomkamp's movie on hold indefinitely.

Now, though, it sounds like Fox has finally got Ridley Scott to settle on title and a plot for what used to be called Prometheus 2. Because they've officially announced a name and synopsis:

Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created in ALIEN with ALIEN: COVENANT, the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with PROMETHEUS — and connects directly to Scott's 1979 seminal work of science fiction. Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world — whose sole inhabitant is the "synthetic" David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.

Of course, two main questions remain to be answered. The first is, will Alien: Covenant also feature Elizabeth Shaw, the lone surviving human scientist from Prometheus? Scott has previously said that Noomi Rapace would reprise her role, but it's hard to take him at his word at this point.

The second question is, who will direct the third instalment of the "prequel trilogy" mentioned in the press release? Scott, or Blomkamp?

Stay tuned.
