Katie Holmes Joins Scientology

Katie Holmes' publicists (the same who represent her "boyfriend" Tom Cruise) have managed to fully complete her brainwashing. It has been announced that Katie will be "converting" to the "religion" of Scientology.

But here's the thing. No matter what you think about celebrities, people like Tom Cruise and John Travolta cannot be that stupid (well, maybe Travolta). Joining an obvious cult that uses bad sci-fi stories to promise enlightenment while prying away hundreds of thousands of dollars from its members doesn't seem like the kind of thing they'd fall for. Yes, celebrities are generally vain, paranoid, and have self-esteem issues, but can someone who's had a succesful career for over two decades really believe in something as obviously phoney as Scientology?

I think it's far more likely that Cruise is more of a spokesman for the cult, using his celebrity to garner attention, all the while pocketing a nice tidy sum for his efforts. I'm not about to go do the research on this, but I'd bet hard cash that his agency reps Scientology too.
