It's been a pretty disappointing summer for English sport fans. Euro 2012 turned out to be as dire as many had predicted before the tournament. Andy Murray might have reached the Wimbledon final, but his tears at the it's conclusion show that he might just be another loveable loser rather than a cold-hearted winning machine. And Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button's Formula 1 seasons are quickly diluting into a disaster.

However, with the London Olympics still to come it isn't all bad for those of us from across the pond. And now cyclist Bradley Wiggins might be about to add to this joy by becoming the first Englishman to ever win the Tour de France.

We'll have to see if this turns out to be a historic moment but it does make it look rather promising for Britain's hopes at the Olympic individual time trails in a few weeks time.

Wiggins has been among the favourites since the Tour started from the Belgian city of Liege for the 3,500km race to Paris. But his fellow competitors which have included last year's winner Cadel Evans, Canada's Ryder Hesjedal, last year's 3rd place rider Andy Schleck and Italy's Vincenzo Nibali have all fallen drastically behind the Englishman.

Maybe it won't be too bad a summer of sports after all then.
