Amelia Hamlin just gave the internet exactly the kind of interview that keeps people talking. In a new profile with Variety around of her role in FX’s new series The Beauty, the model gets candid about her medical history and cosmetic procedures, including a breast reduction that, she says, came down to a very unusual “medically necessary” situation.

According to Amelia, she needed the reduction after complications involving an infection linked to a nipple ring. Her words (and we can only quote as reported): she said the reduction was done “to prevent a case of sepsis from an infection caused by a nipple ring.” That’s not something you see every day in a press cycle, and if nothing else, it’s definitely distinctive as reasons go.

Following the reduction, she went on to get breast implants again, explaining that she wasn’t happy with the scarring and wanted a reconstruction that felt more “her.” According to the interview, that decision led to a 14-hour surgery, not exactly a lunch break in cosmetic land.

“I decided to get another breast augmentation because I wasn’t happy with the scarring from the reduction”

Of course, all this is coming out as she gears up to appear in The Beauty, and yes, spoiler alert, one of her scenes involves her character literally exploding on camera. It is an FX show, after all, if something isn’t dramatic, is it really a Ryan Murphy production?
