The only thing America might like more than Hugh Jackman is Hugh Jackman in a wig, which makes the prospect of him rugging up once again in The Front Runner seems like a can't miss proposition. The story of former Senator Gary Hart's rollercoaster ride of a presidential campaign—one that lasted less than a month, all told—finds the magnanimous Aussie playing one of the most notorious presidential candidates in history.
The film will focus mostly on that period between when Hart announced his candidacy on April 13, 1987 until he suspended his campaign in the midst of controversy on May 8, 1987. It took less than one month for scandal to torpedo his career, something that's almost unprecedented in the history of American politics—the scream that killed Howard Dean's campaign might be less interesting, but it's gotta be the dumbest thing that's ever ended a presidential campaign.
Coming as it does from Oscar nominee Jason Reitman, the film's got some awards heat around it, most of it centered around the fact that the Academy really wants to give Hugh Jackman an Oscar. I don't think they want him to have one as much as they want Bradley Cooper, though, who I predict will win Best Actor this year for A Star is Born.
The Front Runner opens on Election Day, November 6.
