Unless you're up on the world of French filmmakers, it's likely you've never seen a Claire Denis film. The provocateur's films include Beau Travail, Bastards, White Material, and the sublimely bloody Trouble Every Day, and her latest, High Life, takes the filmmakers somewhere she's never been before: outer space.
Hot off his starring role in one of last year's best films, Good Time, Robert Pattinson teams with Denis for her first English language film alongside Outkast's Andre Benjamin, Mia Goth, and Denis regular Juliette Binoche. Pattinson plays one of a number of convicts who were sent into space for a human reproductive experiment, but soon find themselves hurtling toward a black hole and wondering what the true purpose of their mission was.
From the looks of it, the film joins other recent challenging sci-fi films like Under the Skin and Ex Machina, films that aren't interested in providing answers to any questions, but rather seek to pose questions that audience can wrestle with long after the film is over. Reaction to the film out of this year's Toronto International Film Festival suggests that this will be a film that is difficult to love but impossible not to admire.
High Life opens in France on November 7, with a stateside limited release to happen sometime before the end of the year.
