There's so much that I want to say about this new trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. First of all, it's the first time that we get a real sense of the scope and scale of the film. The first teaser was a lot of isolated moments, whereas this trailer has a bit of a narrative and one that a lot of fans aren't going to be pleased with.

There are plenty of moments worth discussing like the fiery Finn and Phasma fight, Kylo Ren considering killing Leia and Leia knowing damn well what he's up to, that furry little Porg roaring like Chewie, those winter foxes, all of it. So strange and still so familiar.

The main thing we need to talk about, however, is that stinger at the end of the trailer. Is that a bit of misdirection? Part of me wants to think it will play out exactly like that in the film, but writer/director Rian Johnson's reversal on fans watching the new trailer leads me to believe it's edited. See, on Sunday, a fan asked Johnson on Twitter if she should skip the new trailer to avoid any spoilers. He responded very cautiously and as someone who is protective of his creation...

Then yesterday, a few minutes after the trailer premiered during Monday Night Football, Johnson totally reversed his position...

I feel like this is an indication that Johnson wants people going into the theater thinking that this is the way that scene will play out, but in the end, she was just talking to Luke or whatever. Who knows? It makes dramatic sense that Luke fears he'll fail as a teacher again and Rey will become another Kylo Ren, which drives her away... right into the arms of Kylo Ren. I feel like that's where they would take it, but it feels to obvious at the same time. I think fans and force users alike need to come to terms with the fact that light and dark have failed and that an actual balance of the force is gonna be the way of the future.

We'll all find out when Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens on December 15. Tickets are now on sale and check out the new theatrical poster below!
