LeBron James Wants to See the Game Tape From Jack Taylor’s 138 Point Night

The legend of Jack Taylor is growing. It's a big story, so of course reporters are going to ask some of the best players in the world what they think of a 5'10" guard at a D-III school scoring 138 points in just 36 minutes of action. LeBron James told reporters today that the feat sounds 'unbelievable' and that he wants to the see the game tape. I hope he does.

Based on all the different articles I've read, Taylor's 138 gets shadier by the hour. He scored his points by taking 108 shots. Taylor often didn't cross half court into the defensive end. Grinnell College has made the news before for their coach's scheme, which is to shoot 94 times a game, with a third of those being three-point attempts, to pressure the the other team into playing their tempo, and to rotate players five at a time every minute or so. Except Taylor played 36 minutes, while no one else on the team played more than 15.

I thought initially that this was just a stunt, and it clearly was. Reports from the game say that multiple times Grinnell players got offensive rebounds and passed up uncontested shots at the rim to pass back out to Taylor for another three point attempt. That would explain how a guy could get 71 attempts from behind the arc in one game.

Last season Grinnell made national news when a player scored 89. Another Grinnell player scored 77 in a 1998 game. It should be noticed that Faith Baptist Bible, Grinnell's opponent last night, isn't even a D-III school and not even NAIA. They play in something called the NCCAA, the National Christian College Athletic Association, and they're in the second division of that. It's a school with an enrollment of 330. No offense to the guys who play there, but they're not exactly top flight competition.

So the game plan was for Taylor to break the scoring record. At least they stuck to it.
