Well, it seems like The Avengers has hit a chord with quite a few people then, hit a chord to the tune of $200 million over it's opening weekend.
This has eclipsed the previous best opening weekend of $169 million in July 2011 by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 and also means that Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises will need to amass a great haul to beat this record.
But when you consider that both The Dark Knight and Spider-Man 3 took just shy of $160 million when they were originally released maybe there is still hope for Christian Bale's latest rendition of the Caped Crusader and The Amazing Spider-Man.

My schedule is jammed packed and I can't fit anything else in. The press announced my possible attachment far too soon. I know many of you wanted me to be involved, and I'm sorry to disappoint you." Isn't that nice.
