NFL is Making a Mess Out of Bounty-Gate

Oh what a tangled web we weave, when we practice to deceive!

For the majority of the investigation into allegations that a bounty system was in place in New Orleans during defensive coordinator Gregg Williams' tenure with the team (2009-11) the perception has been that various members of the Saints organization were guilty of weaving a web of lies. Now it is starting to appear that the NFL may be the guilty party.

A New Twist to the New Orleans Saints Bounty Scandal

It’s been a few weeks since the whole Bounty-Gate scandal broke that resulted in New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton being suspended for the year, GM Mickey Loomis for eight weeks, and assistant head coach Joe Vitt for six. Although the NFL was quick to hand down a penalty on the coaching staff and Loomis, it has taken some time for the NFL to hand down a punishment for the players.

Well, it looks like that it might take a little while longer for that to happen.

Whistle-blower Named in Saints Eavesdropping Case

Journalists count on their informants for stories; the informants count on anonymity. However, often times the natural, innate curiosity of the public at large along with the desire to print the next big story first wins out. Telling people who started it—whatever it happens to be—is simply too juicy of a story.

In time, the source behind the allegations that New Orleans Saints GM Mickey Loomis had his box rewired so that he could listen in on the opposing team’s communications at the Superdome. Well that day has come to pass.

The New Orleans Saints are Under Fire Again

Some voodoo women must have put one heck of a curse on the New Orleans Saints because a bad off-season looks like it is getting a whole lot worse. With another accusation of wrong-doing being levied against the team the metaphorical levy could end up breaking any day now.

According to ESPN (and they wouldn’t lie to us, right?) general manager Mickey Loomis had a special device wired into his suite at the Superdome that allowed him to listen in on communications between the opposing team’s coaches.

Go ahead. Hang your head and shake it in disbelief for a few moments.

Surprise! Surprise! Saints Name Joe Vitt Interim Head Coach

While the possibility of having Bill Parcells lead another team to the Super Bowl was nice and distracting for a while, it appears that the Saints are going with the logical choice for Sean Payton’s replacement next season. On Thursday the Saints announced that assistant head coach (and linebackers coach) Joe Vitt would serve as the head coach of the team while Sean Payton is suspended due to the Bountygate scandal.

As the assistant head coach he would (or at least should) be the man who is the most familiar with the team. He’s been with the team in his current capacity since January 2006, and did take over briefly last season when Sean Payton was laid up with a broken leg. His record as a head coach is not stellar (4-7 with the St. Louis Rams in 2005), but in all fairness he really didn't have much to work with there.

Bill Parcells Not Going to Coach Saints Next Season

When the news first broke that Sean Payton was going to be suspended for the 2012-13 NFL season the Saints Faithful felt like they got a punch to the gut. Without their head coach the team’s chances of becoming the first team to play in a Super Bowl it was hosting became awful long odds.

However, when rumors began to circulate that future Hall of Fame coach and a former Super Bowl winner, Bill Parcells, was thinking of taking the job you could hear a collective sigh of relief being let out in bars all over the Big Easy.

NFL Denies Sean Payton, Year-long Suspension Upheld

The NFL denied New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton's appeal of his one year suspension after the 'Bountygate' scandal. General manager Mickey Loomis and assistant coach Joe Vitt also had their appeals denied, according to FoxSports.com.

Commissioner Roger Goodell heard the appeals last week, but was also the one who handed down the punishments, so the denials aren't really that big of a surprise.

Goodell suspended the three men after the Saints were found to have been running an illegal bounty program where players were rewarded financially for taking opposing players out of games, under former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams. Williams has been suspended indefinitely and will reportedly not appeal that decision.
