NBA Playoffs – First Round Finally Ends, East Enters Second Round

It took two game sevens, but the Western Conference first round finally ended over the weekend, with both Los Angeles squads advancing. Meanwhile, the Eastern Conference had two second round series get underway.

Los Angeles Lakers 96 - Denver 87

The Lakers needed something big out of their big men and Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum delivered. Gasol had 23 points, Bynum added 18 boards, and the return of Metta World Peace was key to the Lakers rather easy win. MWP locked down Andre Miller and Danilo Gallinari, holding them to a combined six points. On the other end, World Peace scored 15 points, connecting on four threes. Tonight, the Lakers are in Oklahoma City and we'll see if going seven games with Denver took a toll on L.A. Read More » »

Lakers Can’t Close Out Series Against Nuggets (VIDEO)

LA Lakers lose Game 6 to Denver Nuggets 113-96

Typically for the Los Angeles Lakers the team goes how Kobe Bryant goes. Well, on Thursday night when the team was trying to close out its opening round series against the feisty Denver Nuggets, Kobe Bryant was so sick he was likely wishing he was anywhere but a basketball court.

Sure enough, the Lakers failed to close out the series; Denver won 113-96. Read More » »

NBA Playoff Roundup – Knicks Win, Bulls on the Brink

There were four games on the playoff schedule in the NBA yesterday and most series are looking to be decided quickly. The Knicks avoided the sweep, the Bulls are toast thanks to injuries, the Lakers are set to finish off Denver, and Boston is showing Atlanta they're not ready for the big time.

Philadelphia 89 - Chicago 82

It's easy to want to feel bad for the Bulls. They earned the number one seed, even with Derrick Rose missing 27 regular season games. Rose came back seemingly healthy for the first round, then tore his ACL at the end a game one victory. Chicago lost the next game, then lost center Joakim Noah in the next game with a nasty sprained ankle. Those are the breaks, and Philadelphia is playing inspired ball in the meantime. They should close out Chicago, who have to be feeling mentally defeated at this point. Philly leads 3-1 with game five tomorrow in Chicago. Read More » »

NBA Playoffs – Bulls Miss Rose, Pierce Leads Celts, Kobe Goes Off

Three games in the NBA Playoffs last night and they all lived up to the hype. The 76ers destroyed the East's number one seed, the Chicago Bulls, who were playing without star Derrick Rose. The Celtics took game two on the road in Atlanta, thanks to Paul Pierce, and Kobe Bryant led the Lakers to a 2-0 lead in their series with the Nuggets.

Chicago looked lost without Rose, who tore his ACL in the final minutes of game one and is out for the playoffs and beyond. Philadelphia seriously shifted the momentum with a 109-92 win in the Windy City, and the Bulls confidence might just be shaken enough that the eigth seeded Sixers could pull this series off.  Read More » »

Andrew Bynum is a Shot-Blocking Machine! (VIDEO)

Andrew Bynum of the Lakers making his 10th block of the night

Andrew Bynum may be a large man-child that acts like a real idiot at times, but sometimes he's a man on a mission. Sunday that mission was clear--block as many shots as possible. I think its safe to say that mission was completed.

Bynum entered into rare territory when he rejected shot No 10 in the fourth period against the Denver Nuggets. With that block he tied the record for most blocked shots in a single post season game held by Hakeem "the Dream" Olajuwon and Mark Eaton. He also broke the team record previously held by the legendary Kareem Abdul-Jabaar.

To make the night even better for Bynum and the Lakers, he also had 10 points and 13 rebounds to record the first triple-double in post season play for the Lakers since Magic Johnson did it back in the 1991 Finals.

Oh, and in case anyone cares, the Lakers defeated the Nuggets 103-88.

Peace Out – Ron Artest Suspended Seven Games by NBA

I just can't call him Metta World Peace when he does stuff like what he did to James Harden on Sunday. The old Ron Artest was back in full force, much like the force of the elbow he planted right behind Harden's ear.

So the NBA suspended Ron Artest for seven games. That doesn't seem long enough for a lot of people, especially all of us who have watched Artest become the most suspended player in NBA history. Artest has been suspended for a total of 111 games, with 86 coming from the 'Malice at the Palace' player/fan brawl in 2004.

He got off easy in this one. Read More » »

Lakers on Hot Streak Under Coach Kobe Bryant

Okay, that's kind of a joke, but I'm sure it's not far from the truth. In fact, Ramon Sessions said as much after the Lakers win over Dallas yesterday.

That's Coach Bryant now, he's over there drawing stuff up on the board. He's pulling us over to the side and helping us out tremendously.

There you go. Kobe has missed the last five games with a shin injury, and the Lakers have won the last four with Coach Byrant helping out head coach Mike Brown. It raises the question, are the Lakers better without Kobe? Read More » »
