Former NFL great Junior Seau's death has been officially ruled a suicide, and now his family has said that they will allow his brain to be studied to see if concussions he sustained lead to brain damage.

The family was considering this almost from the beginning, but they didn't want to make any emotional decisions...And when they came to a joint decision that absolutely this was the best thing, it was a natural occurrence for the Seau family to go forward.

Junior Seau – A Look Back at his Career in Photos

Junior Seau, who died today of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, was one of the greatest linebackers of his generation. Seau, who earned the nickname "Say-Ow" because of how hard he hit ball carriers, became a star while he was still at USC.

Seau was picked by his hometown team, the San Diego Chargers, with the fifth pick in the 1990 Draft. Junior made an immediate impact and was named an alternate to the Pro Bowl. For the next 11 seasons, Seau led the Chargers' defense, helping them to the Super Bowl in 1994. Seau was named AFC Player of the Year for that season.

Seau was named to the 1990s All-Decade Team, after being named All-Pro every season in that decade. Seau went on to play for the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots, but will always be remembered as a San Diego Charger.

Junior Seau’s Death Suspected to be Suicide

TMZ is reporting that their law enforcement sources say that police at the scene where Junior Seau was found dead this morning suspect the former NFL star committed suicide.

Seau, who was 43-years-old, reportedly sent text messages to his three kids and ex-wife yesterday saying 'love you' but his family didn't suspect anything was wrong.

Seau was involved in a suspicious car crash in 2010, where he apparently had driven his SUV off a cliff, but at the time Seau was adamant that he wasn't trying to kill himself.

TMZ keeps updating their coverage of the tragedy.
