Bobby Valentine Ejected for First Time as Red Sox Manager

It has been a long season for the Boston Red Sox. After the free fall at the end of last season the team brought in Bobby Valentine to right the ship, and so far it hasn't been easy. Prior to Saturday night's game against the Philadelphia Phillies the Sox are a dismal 18-21, and in last place--that's right, I said last place--in the AL East.

Part of the reason has been the reluctance of the team to fall in line with their new manager or the inability of Valentine to connect with his team (hmmm...maybe Valentine should challenge Josh Beckett to a round of golf). Which ever explanation you go with the end result is the same, bad baseball.

The Curse of the A-Rod Strikes at Fenway

For years baseball fans in Boston believed that it was the ‘Curse of the Bambino’ that kept their beloved Red Sox from making it to the World Series. The 86-year drought was ended back in 2004 when the Sox did the impossible by climbing out of a 0-3 deficit against the hated Yankees in the ALCS just to make it to the World Series (where they swept the St. Louis Cardinals).

Fast forward to 2012 and the Red Sox have a second World Series title under their belts (2007). On Friday, April 20, they were primed to celebrate those wins along with 100 years of Red Sox history as part of their home field’s 100th birthday celebration.

But the ‘Curse of the A-Rod’ had to strike and put a damper on things.

Want to See the Worst Slide in Baseball? (VIDEO)

Kelly Shoppach trying to slide 4/13/12

There are certain things that you expect to see out of certain players. Typically it will be your shortstops and outfielders that are more likely to steal bases. These guys are often smaller, faster guys that have the speed and agility to beat the throw.

Now other guys are just as capable of stealing bases; they just don't do it as often. As of Saturday night (April 14) only five catchers had recorded a stolen base this season (just one). Catchers just don't steal all that often. One of those five joined the list Friday by recording the first stolen base of his career.

I'm talking about Kelly Shoppach of the Boston Red Sox. At 31 years of age and with 464 professional games under his belt he had never stolen a base (MLB record for longest time to record first steal). After you watch how he goes about attempting his first steal you'll understand why he has never done it before.

Funny thing is he was actually safe!
