Stephen King’s ‘IT’ Breaks All Kinds of Box Office Records

If you're a fan of obscure box office records and qualifiers on top of qualifiers, have I got some great news for you! The first R-rated big screen adaptation of Stephen King's It broke all manner of box office records this weekend and we'll take a look at a few of my favorites.

Warner Brothers officially reported their estimated weekend take at $117 million, though Deadline is clinging to their substantially higher figure of $123 million. Official receipts won't be done being tallied until later today, but any way you slice it, this film is a monster hit. And speaking of Deadline, they published a list of just some of the box office "records" this film broke with this opening weekend...

The best opening day ever for a horror title ($51M), the highest pre-show for a horror film, one in September and for an R-rated movie ($13.5M), the highest three-day opening record weekend for the genre and the second-highest opening for an R-rated pic (behind Deadpool‘s $132.4M), the best September opening for any genre which means the best September opening to date for the studio.

Great googly moogly. Those are some strange records, but there hasn't been a substantial box office hit since Dunkirk and that was nearly two months ago. These people have gotta have something good to talk about. More good news on the horizon is that in two weeks, Kingsman: The Golden Circle and The LEGO Ninjago Movie will both open north of $40 million, meaning that September will be a bigger month than August this year for the first time maybe ever.
