Sonic the Hedgehog Gets All Artsy On Our Butts

Art’s always been a little lost on me. I’m not the sort of guy who can cruise around fancy-ass galleries, a thoughtful beard-strokey expression on my face, pondering the meaning of life while ogling a big red dot on a canvas. That landscape isn’t ‘capturing the zeitgeist of a world modern technology is leaving behind,’ it’s just a kid playing in a field and a cow taking a dump in the background.

Maybe I’m just an ignorant dude from Merry Olde England, but that stuff’s just not my bag. If you want art to grab my attention, it’ll have to be with this sort of stunt right here.

As you well-informed Ego-gamers-about-town will know, this year marks the 25th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog. SEGA are busting their butts to celebrate this in all kinds of ways, trying to bring the once awesome ‘hog back to relevance. The most upper-class, pipe-and-monocle of these ways is with a series of art exhibitions.

SEGA have partnered with galleries across the UK (where else?) to create something pretty damn special, Kotaku reports. Here’s SEGA director of brand licensing Jason Rice with the skinny:

“The Sonic licensing programme is already well known for its art programmes but we wanted to really push the boundaries with this project. With Washington Green we have been able to create a one-of-a-kind collection for the franchise. They have given us access to some of contemporary art’s most celebrated artists not to mention a number of new up and coming talents. The result is a collection of truly stunning and innovative works from some of the finest painters and sculptors around today.”

So there you go. Everything’s still in progress and there are no images to show yet, but we can see Sonic’s going up in the world. There’ll be butlers handing out canapes at his cocktail parties before you know it.
