‘Adult themes’ is an interesting sort of concept. Whichever medium you’re talking about, it can mean all sorts of things. Really, an adult theme could be anything from S&M to high-level nerdly economic jargon.

All of that said, there’s only a couple of them worth caring about. We don’t go to the movies to see Arnold Schwarzenegger applying for a short-term business loan, and his struggle with the bank fatcats to get his falafel stand off the ground. We go for the only two adult themes that matter: hideous blood-leaky guntastic violence and good ol’ fashioned nekkidness.

Video games, for their part, have never been all that great at the second one. The Witcher 3 and its varied high-profile sex scenes are about the best they can offer in that department. If it’s gory action you want, though, gaming has you covered big style.

Doom may have just been eclipsed as most violent game of the year. It has its moments, sure (every moment is a demon scrote-crushin,’ jaw-rippin’ good time, come to think of it), but Shadow Warrior 2 is looking like a real contender. All we’ve got to go on so far is this brief minute and a half reveal trailer, but still. If the artsy slow-mo Gears of War-ish monster chainsawing on show here is anything to go by, there’s something special on the way here.

Check it out above.
