While not as illustrious as some of Capcom’s endeavors, the insidious influence of Viewtiful Joe has had a profound effect on players in the know. Originally released in 2003, the game is largely a scrolling beat ‘em up, with the titular hero as protagonist. The comical cutscenes and accompanying antics from Joe himself are a highlight, and the 3d cel-shaded aesthetic is sublime. Most notable is the time-altering mechanic, with players able to rewind or fast-forward time on a whim. This had twofold puzzle-solving and combat connotations, and secured Joe’s reputation as an anomaly worthy of attention.
