Next Christmas is going to be the only year without a Star Wars or Avatar movie, so studios are scrambling to get their films out for next Christmas in a bid to enjoy some of that post-holiday box office mojo. It should come as no surprise, then, that Sony is trotting out another Spider-Man movie next Christmas, but it's not going to be like anything you've seen before.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a feature length animated film that seeks to bring a non-Peter Parker Spider-Man to the big screen. The film is a loose adaptation of the Ultimate Spider-Man comic book arc that saw African-American teen Miles Morales take on the mantle of Spider-Man following the death of Peter Parker. They appear to be sticking close to his origin story as the only cast members listed so far are Dope's Shameik Moore as Miles, Moonlight and Luke Cage's Mahershala Ali as his uncle Aaron Davis and Atlanta's Brian Tyree Henry as Miles' other uncle Jefferson.

I'm also digging the animation style, which looks to be attempting to bring a comic book aesthetic to an animated feature. The film was written by Phil Lord, who produces alongside frequent partner Chris Miller, so you can expect some of their trademark humor to make its way into the film. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse hits theaters one year from Friday, December 14, 2018.
