Free Pussy Riot!

Pussy Riot pleads not guilty to sacrilege and subversive activity. You read that sentence right. Pussy Riot is a Russian feminist post-punk band that got into to some hot holy water with the Russian government and the Orthodox church. It seems that the ladies didn't take kindly to Russian Orthodox patriarch Kirill's support of teenage heartthrob Vladimir Putin in the March elections. So, they exercised their rights of free speech by storming Moscow's Christ the Savior Cathedral wearing goofy colored masks and sung a truly terrible song called Punk Prayer. They may spend 7 years in jail for their trouble. Then there will really be a Pussy Riot!

I'm not sure that what they did deserves 7 years in jail. The terrible song deserves a good punch to the face, but not actual jail time. The over zealous actions of the Putinistas have received international condemnation. Even Amnesty International got in on the fun with their, (tee hee), Free Pussy Riot campaign. It just makes me happy to be an American. If a few of my feminist friends and I were to don Mexican wrestling masks and head down to the Christian Science reading room to sing Thomas Dolby's She Blinded Me With Science to protest healthcare reform, we'd probably just get off with a slap on the wrist. Listen, Pussy Riot, if you survive the notoriously brutal Russian prisons you should come to America. Here you can do stupid, pointless, offensive stuff and no one cares. Our founding fathers fought for your right to act like a moron. USA! USA! USA!
