Natalie Portman is not a Prostitute

02:36 AM, Filed under: Home \ Celebrities \ Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman Pictures
When you're reading celebrity gossip blogs, or other online "news" sources, do keep in mind that, quite often, celebrity quotes are taken out of context to make them sound more outlandish or ridiculous. Take, for example, the Natalie Portman article from BANG Media International that is syndicated on both the Female First, and Life Style Extra websites, which says:

Natalie Portman claims actresses who go to Hollywood to get rich are no better than prostitutes.

The 'V for Vendetta' star insists she only takes on roles based on their artistic merit and says she would never agree to be in a film just because she was offered a large fee.

She said: "I don't want to ever be working for money because then you are no different to a prostitute."

Okay, first of all, nowhere in the original article, published by The Independent (which they did not cite directly) did Natalie Portman ever "insist" on only taking roles with artistic merit. If anything, she said the opposite:

"But don't get me wrong," she grins, suddenly self-conscious that she's sounding like the school swot. "I don't want to have a super-snobby intellectual career."

Futhermore, even though it can be inferred that Natalie Portman may think actresses who take movie parts "to get rich" are no better than prostitutes, it is not for a journalist to jump to conclusions.

The point is, her comments shouldn't have been taken out of context. Because even when you leave them in context, that quote makes her sound pretty dumb.

Comments are open on this one, so go ahead, and let me know what you think about the quote, it's context, and whatever else is on your mind. Also check out these pictures of Natalie Portman looking like her usual cute self on TRL last week, with more after the jump as always.

She probably said "I won't prostitute myself for money..." meaning she wouldn't use her craft for to make cash.

Dude, she could pretty much say anything that she wants, no matter how outlandish and we would still all love her.

Posted by: AndyPandy at March 24, 2006 07:09 AM

Little Pretty One didn't realize one has to THINK
what to say in the public, once being a famous
person. But there are much worse witticism than this one and Keira is a good actress, so who cares

Posted by: Joni at March 24, 2006 08:56 AM

I wish she would not talk more often

Posted by: Mordar at March 24, 2006 09:40 AM

I just think she was misunderstood. She has been in the business for to long to make that type of mistake. Then again who knows. Sometimes we open mouth and insert foot.

Whatever. She won't sell out for movie rolls, but she'll shill for overseas hair products. I like her and everything, but she sounds so self-righteous (sp?). It's obnoxious.

"I don't want to ever be working for money..."

What the hell do you want to be working for then, honey, birdseed??

Posted by: jasmine at March 24, 2006 10:53 AM

That is part of the fun in celebrity gossip. It really isn't responsible reporting. When you take things out of context, its what makes the business thrive.

I dont necessarily agree with it, but Gossip is by nature ear to mouth. So ofcourse things are going to get twisted as it gets passed on. I just think back to that stupid little experiment everyone did in like 8th grade where they would have everyone sit in a circle, tell one person at the end of the line a sentence, and have them pass it along and almost every time by the time it got to the last person in the line, the sentence is no where near what it originally started it to be.

Why do you defend her? Are you jewish and this is all part of some weird shit between the two of you and your mother? You definitely have snuck some yiddish onto the site.

So she thinks shes better than everyone because shes not like all the other hollywood people who think they're better than everyone else on account of the fact that they're rich and pretty, rather than just thinking it because shes also rich and pretty. But she still thinks shes better than everyone and shes still annoying.

Posted by: billy budd at March 24, 2006 11:28 AM

I didnt mean to be dismissive when I asked why you were defending her. I'm genuinely curious. I mean why do people deny that Clay Aiken is gay and than flip out when they can no longer deny it? Why did people do the same with the pictures of Emma Watson drinking? What does this say about all of us and the insecurities that we all bring to this.

Why is it so important to you that she be pretty, humble, intelligent, etc? Do you think that shes the only one like that?

Posted by: billy budd at March 24, 2006 11:35 AM

"I don't want to ever be working for money because then you are no different to a prostitute."

Wow, only a filthy rich person would ever make a comment like that. Most people I know would love to be doing something other than their jobs, but they are forced to continue being slaves to the grind in order to get "money," that thing most of us need to pay rent. If only we all had the luxury to dress up and pretend to be someone else while getting paid gobs of cash. Way to alienate your fans, Natalie!

Posted by: Jamie at March 24, 2006 11:39 AM

What's the big deal? Lots of actors have said that they try to choose their parts based on artistic merit, rather than being in some piece of crap movie for a big payday. The gossip "reporter" has carefully taken the remarks out of context, and framed them in such a way as to give Portman a snotty attitude that she may or may not actually have.

Posted by: bingethinker at March 24, 2006 12:04 PM

Crap! I work for money! My mom is going to be mad at me once she finds out I'm a prostitute.

Posted by: I at March 24, 2006 01:49 PM

Natalie Portman is only just an actress, her thick american accent makes her appear half witted and her artistic range has all the depth of a sheet of rice-paper.

Furthermore in Closer there were more attractive & more intelligent women than her dancing on the podiums

Posted by: Sir Harry at March 24, 2006 01:50 PM

I'm glad to see her so principled...plus I'd sooner hand over $10 to see her in a movie than hand over $50 to get a blow job from her. She is completely devoid of any sensuality/sexuality.

Posted by: Logan_Fellows at March 24, 2006 04:01 PM

for the record dont be thrown off by this money bullshit. her family is already well off. she grew up on the north shore of long island. so for her to say she dont care about the money is like Bill Gates winning the lottery or Montgomery Burns winning that 1 million dollar bet in "homer at the bat". she doesnt need the money

how do ya'll think she GOT famous? her parents are rich. god knows its not her looks, OR her talent that got her where she is today.

and she is a snotty bitch. everyone that lives on the north shore of long island is. they think there some sort of classic "Aristocrat" when they are prolly performing some of the acts described in that movie.

fucking rich people, you can ALWAYS count on some bullshit comments like this...of COURSE its not about the money when you dont need it.

fucking bitch needs to get over herself.

Posted by: Phillip McCracken at March 24, 2006 04:21 PM

Are you kidding me. Either statement (if she made them) makes her sound like the no talent prostitute she is.
She only takes movies on artistic merit? Did any one see Star Wars. Did you? Crap and she was crap in them.
Don't want to have a super snobby intellectual career?
Dis you see Star Wars?
Please re above comment.
Lets face it she sucks and who cares what reason she has for picking projects. She will suck in all of them.

I'd definitely pay to sleep with Natalie! Wait... what was the question again?

Posted by: zedzded at March 24, 2006 08:57 PM

Her comments are pretty bogus on this one, but I still somehow like her.

Posted by: Jessica at March 24, 2006 08:58 PM

i think natalie portman and giada de laurentis on the food network are eerie twins separated at birth

Posted by: jenni at March 24, 2006 11:07 PM

Oh she said that? Well whatever she says most people still like her. I mean come on. She got the ears of Legolas and the height of Frodo. She's cute. Well anyway cute is what you want your pet to be but hey its Natalie Portman.

Posted by: ashlei at March 25, 2006 04:01 AM

Hey, Phillip McCracken! Having problems with dough? Such crap! RICH PEOPLE, NORTH
SHORE OF LONG ISLAND... Jesus! Oh, got it. HAving complex NOT being from North Shore? You probably from "rural Wisconsin".(Nothing against Wisconsin.) Or a "dixie boy"? Natalie is great, intelligent, multilingual = uhh, that means she speaks many languages, /that you probably don´t/ actress who deserves respect. Ok, that you don´t like her, not everybody has to, but to call her
bitch...

Posted by: Joni at March 25, 2006 07:02 AM

Posted by: momo at March 25, 2006 09:48 AM

working only for the money is like prostitution? Jesus h. christ. Yeah, cause I'm totally psyched to be whoring myself out for $15 an hour at my suck ass retail job. Thanks you thoughtless, inconsiderate Douche.

Posted by: now I hate her at March 25, 2006 10:35 AM

I have a hard time believing that she would say "no different to a prostitute," rather than, "no different than a prostitute." Who's more likely to have trouble with their grammar, a gossip rag or a Harvard grad?

Posted by: jc at March 25, 2006 03:05 PM

Are you kidding me. Natalie wasn't rich growing up. Her father was one of those "doesn't get paid alot doctors." You guys know it was taken out of context. And she doen't think she's better than us. you guys are fucking naive and gullible. bitches*

Posted by: Jessica at March 25, 2006 03:17 PM

Joni - sigh! she's thick, has an attrocious accent, marginal talent and a character breadth potential that goes all the way from one wooden clothes hanger to.............another wooden clothes hanger. Cute maybe, pretty possibly, beautiful errr no, talented - for a clothes hanger (or any other wooden item) maybe but not for an actress.

Posted by: sirharry at March 26, 2006 08:55 AM

YOU IDIOTS
ALL SHE IS SAYING THAT IF SHE WAS OFFERED A ROLE THAT PROMISED A FUCKING HUGE PAYCHECK SHE WOULDNT TAKE IT UNLESS IT HAD ARTISTIC MERIT

RETARDS, SHES SAYING THEORETICALLY THAT SHE PLACES MORE VALUE ON ITS ARTISTIC MERIT

SPAZZES

FUCKING LOSERS ON HERE SWISSTING THINGS TO THE WORST SCENARIO

Posted by: so at March 26, 2006 10:27 AM

errrrrrrrr........who on earth would ever offer her a role that had artistic merit & given her incredible lack of talent whatever would she do with it?

SIRHARRY, thanks for your reaction. At least have
something to say. But this SO -thing that posted his/her/its message on March 26,10:27 AM...

Hola momo,

habla ingles? No? Bueno. Tu es un PENDEJO, HIJO...
Nathalie - una ACTATRIZ!!!

Posted by: Joni at March 27, 2006 01:04 AM

joni, your spanish is soooooooooooooooo good!! jajaja
natalie can speak spanish, can't she?
natalie es una pésima actriz y tú eres gilipollas

Posted by: momo at March 27, 2006 08:14 AM

Now, I really like Natalie Portman, and I think she seems like a pretty intelligent woman....however, her comments are pretty insulting. Basically, she is saying that most everyone working on the planet is a prostitute. I'm a receptionist....I don't do it because I love it, I do it because it pays the bills and I don't have any job-related stress. But, puh-leeeeze...I'm sure she just didn't really give a lot of thought to what she was saying...or like EGO said, it was taken out of context. Still love ya Nat! That SNL rap was awesome!

Posted by: Jenn at March 27, 2006 10:14 PM

momo, I don't speak spanish, only a few words, though I like this language and know even
a poem by Nicolás Guillén by heart /I speak
6 other languauges, incl Swedish/, so I can't
enjoy the meaning of " 'pésima' actriz" and "tú eres 'gilipollas'",
just can guess it doesn't mean "great actress" and "you are OK".
Anyway, was nice to have a talk
You from Spain or a Latin country?
Don't have to answer if you're soooooo mad

Posted by: Joni at March 28, 2006 12:36 AM

hola joni, i'm from Spain, i don't agree with you about natalie but that doesn't mean that i'm mad (o una pendeja). I challenge you to learn spanish (it's a great language!!) nous pouvons parler en français si tu veux (et si tu n'es pas un fou)

Posted by: momo at March 28, 2006 07:50 AM

Posted by: Werewolf at March 28, 2006 11:17 AM

If you ask me, I think she stuck her foot in her mouth on this one.

Posted by: Roonie at March 28, 2006 01:22 PM

saludos

If she did say what they claim it would only mean I'd have more respect for her, for speaking here mind.

> Natalie Portman claims actresses who go to Hollywood to get rich are no better than prostitutes.

I would agree and so would anybody else who has seen a blockbuster that just made them wanna chuck. Matrix sequels anybody? Keanu Reeves and the rest are worse than prostitutes for destroying the first film's name; all because they were greedy SOBs.

> The 'V for Vendetta' star insists she only takes on roles based on their artistic merit and says she would never agree to be in a film just because she was offered a large fee.

Good

> She said: "I don't want to ever be working for money because then you are no different to a prostitute."

#@$&ing acting whores!

Hola Momo,

thanks for message. By the way, what's 'momo'
for name?
Although I speak French /how many languages do you speak?/ I don't like to speak it very much,
I prefer English /though from Central Europe,
I speak like an American, that's no boasting, just
a fact/ and German.

Posted by: Joni at March 29, 2006 12:58 AM

I regard to previous comments by one person in particular. Working a bad job because you need the money to get by isn't the same thing as being an actor who lives in a mansion, having your pick of movies to work in and then going deciding to act in a movie with a really bad script, just because with the pay check you could buy a whole new mansion.

Posted by: Gerry at March 29, 2006 11:47 AM

Hi 'Gerry',

What do you think about "V for Vendetta"? You think it has a good story? Nazi Great Britain?
Would be glad to know your oppinion, 'cause
whoever I ask, has a different one.
Thanx

Posted by: Joni at March 30, 2006 01:31 AM

You guys are all a bag of contradictions and silliness. If you dislike her, why do you treat her words like they're the holy judgment on you handed down from God? The stupid thing is to even think that you can make out a person's character from one sentence he or she says, especially with the prevalence of bullshitting these days (by bullshitting I mean the arena where people can try out new, strange, unpolitically correct ideas just to see how they play out).

Posted by: Andrew at April 2, 2006 02:29 PM

Joni,

I haven't seen "V for Vendetta", but the Wachowski brothers can suck my balls for destroying "The Matrix" by releasing those sequels! One ball for each of them.

BTW, if Nataile Portman has seen those movies then she is the sort of person she has apparently complained about.

Posted by: Gerry at April 3, 2006 02:06 AM

Bah, seen it now. Miss Portman is hot, that's all I have to say about it though.

Posted by: Gerry at April 4, 2006 08:13 AM

I think she mean it right. just the media try to write someting about Natalie Portman. I saw her live in Berlin (2 times ) and she is really a nice and a cute person and also a good actor.
