Mischa Barton Ruined My Life and The O.C.

SPOILER WARNING - If you haven't watched the season finale of The O.C. do not read futher. But seriously, why haven't you watched it yet?
So, Marissa Cooper is dead. I warned you about the spoilers. And as far as we all know, Mischa Barton has left The. O.C. Question is, is this a good thing, or a bad thing? With much of the plot of the show revolving around Marissa's various indiscretions with alcohol, drugs, sex, death and near death, the future of The O.C. is anyone's guess.
Of course, the surprise ending wasn't a very big surprise, what with the constant rumours of Mischa Barton wanting to leave the show. And of course, there was the fact that Access Hollywood totally spoiled it for everyone. It also didn't help much that Mischa spilled the beans to Access Hollywood, saying:
My character has been through so, so much and there's really nothing more left for her to do.
But from the short preview of next season, it seems like anything can happen. Will Seth and Summer go to Rhode Island? Probably not. Will Ryan move to Berkeley? Probably not. Will Kaitlin Cooper be the a million times better than Marissa Cooper? Hell yes!
Still, there are those who want Marissa (and Mischa) back on the show. Yes, the futility of the Internet Petition has already begun. The Save Marissa Cooper Petition is online, and has a goal of 500,000 signatures, but in all honesty, I think petitioning the show's producers is the wrong move, since according to all reports, it was Mischa Barton who most wanted to leave.
A final thought: When Shannon Doherty left Beverly Hills 90210, the show didn't end. In fact, it kept on kicking and screaming for many years after. Was it as good? No, but then again, The O.C. has lost the fire of it's first season too.
I don't know where I stand on the whole issue, but at least they gave us one last look at Mischa Barton in a bikini before they rolled her off a cliff in Ryan's car.

"But seriously, why haven't you watched it yet?"
But seriously, you're gay. You sound like Elijah Wood.
Don't try and cover it up by talking about her in a bikini.

I never watch the show, but I'll check it out just to see Mischa in a bikini!

WTF...i know that its mischa's life and everything but i dont think she realises how many people she is dissapointing by doing this. and they definantly shouldn't continue the show!
why couldnt she just hav gone to live with jimmy like she was supposed to...they had to go and ruin it for us and dissapoint millions of people!
i live in Australia and haven't even seen the last episode yet but now i dont even want to finish watching the rest of season 3 anymore cos thats how dissapointed i am!
and to kleintje238 it was mischa who wnated out of the show to focus on her movie career...LOOK IT UP!
i dont think that she will do well in movies and that she will end up doing shitty ass projects that no one cares about

I have to look it up? Think again. Read Josh's interview with Ausiello.

I never liked The OC, well actually I never watch it that much to like it, but Mischa looks like a good girl, and at the end she is right of leaving the OC cuz if she doesn't start working on other projets she is not going to be a succefull movie start.
Posted by: Silvia at May 20, 2006 11:42 AM
she'll be back! she wasn't pronounced dead, she just...fainted.
Posted by: aguacate jones at May 20, 2006 02:01 PM
Josh killed Marissa, nor Mischa. You read TV Guide interview?
I want her or me and my friend will boycott the show.
Posted by: Wilma at May 20, 2006 03:58 PM
MISHCA BARTON HAS TO STAY IN THE OC!!! THE OC IS NOTHING WITH OUT HER! AND THE FANS WILL GO CRAZY WITHOUT HER!

that show is RETARDED. trashy and plotless and entirely unengaging. And, none of those talking heads have been pretty enough to keep my attention, so would i be sad if the so-called 'prettiest head'... fell off? hahaha. that worked in so many ways. but the answer to my question is HELL NO, i would not care.
can we bin up all the suuuperrrrrr hotttt and wild and crazy OC fans in a loony when they all "GO GRAZY"? and, if you decide to boycott, great! maybe eventually people will see how terribly this show is conditioning teenagers to constantly crave having and being something else that's almost entirely unattainable. worse than Lohan, worse than Hilton, even worse than that cheap wedge flip flop donning Shitney. this isn't a person...it's literally portraying and dictating a norm that seems so real, we can almost buy it. i've been sickened by the obsession with this show since its first nuclear airing... hopefully, the radiation won't take more than a few years to clean away. i'm from los angeles (born and raised, as are my parents), and i think that if someone sings that FUCKING STUPID whiny ass theme song to me one more time, i might shove the LP's of all the shoddy marketable 'musicians' ( that they product place into the show so it can be soooooooooooooooooooooo trendy) straight up their arseholes!!!!!! i'm gonna go vomit now.

to diana... it's a Tv show... give us a break.. I mean all of us love sick teens who are just hopeless romantics to watch this guilty pleasure of ours is not hurting anyone. I mean you can go along bitching all you want about the show, but face the fact. It is entertaining. It keeps you watching the entire time and seriously... i love it. so just shut up... and keep your loud obnoxious opinion to urself.

I'm glad she wanted to leave the show/got fired/whatever. She is my least favorite character, and she's right...there really is no where for her character to go. How many times can they have Ryan and Marissa break up and get back together again. And sorry, but she is not a good actress. She's not horrible, but she has like 3 expressions and has the most unnatural line readings on that show. I was a huge fan first season, but really can't get into it anymore. The other characters are still really strong and played by much better actors, I don't think killing off a main character in this case will hurt the show. Maybe a bunch of crazy marissa fans will stop watching, and the ratings will suffer, but it could still be a good show.

IMHO: the reason O.C. lost some of its spark after the first season, was the misadventures of Marissa. Very tedious. It was one thing after another. By the end of season two, I wanted her gone. I wanted Ryan to get on with his life without feeling responsible for "rescuing" Marissa from herself. She was a spoiled, self-indulgent conniving little creep. Good riddance, I say. There are so many great story lines to be explored. The one death I really regretted for O. C. was the death of the old bastard! Caleb was deliciously evil. He was the J.R. of the O.C.

im glad she left the show....thou her character was central it can be done with out her. season 3 was a washout......hated it. they need to spice things up and mayb marissa exit will do just that. i think the writers have lost their touch. bye marissa....micha.......

BRING MARISSA BACK TO THE OC!!!! There is no way that killing a MAIN CHARACTER is going to help the show! I love Mischa and I don't want her to leave the OC, its weird and sad. The show has already had two people die (johnny didn't die that long ago, jeez!) and its really depressing. i dont think ill be able to watch the show now, it will be so sad
Posted by: SARA at May 21, 2006 06:42 PM
I AGREE WITH SARA (the one above me)- bring marissa back to the OC!!!! I WILL NOT WATCH THE SHOW if a main character like marissa is DEAD. Making all ur fans cry and cry...oh yea thats a GREAT way to end a season. DUMB MOVE!
Posted by: katharina at May 21, 2006 06:45 PM
she is not dead u are all stupid!!!!!!!!!!!!! do u honestly think they would make a fourth season without her! NO NO NO SHES ALIVE THESE ARE ALL STUPID ASS RUMORS!
Posted by: MEGAN! at May 21, 2006 09:55 PM
no they are not stupid ass rumours
she most likely is dead
she's been wanting out of the oc for like half a year now to get into film business.. and thats how most tv shows end a character who wants to leave
Posted by: andrea at May 22, 2006 03:50 PM
I don't get why people are still insisting she's not dead. She's D.E.A.D. Mischa & Josh Schwartz have both confirmed it.
There's also rumours that Mischa chose to leave. It was the producers decision, she was signed on for next season until they killed her off. Josh has also confirmed this too.
And as for telling Access Hollywood, don't blame her. I'd be pissed at the show too since she doesnt have the talent to pull off a movie career, and with no more OC income she'll be poor in a week! Plus she was excited, I dont blame her. I'd be happy to leave that crapfest too.
As for the show. Season 1 was great but season 2 was pretty average and season 3 was a heap of crap! Marissa was annoying but she was essential to the show, when they killed her they killed it. How the heck is Taylor supposed to replace her as that girl is OTT and way too perky, she's a comic sidekick and nothing more. The core four have three years on them of bonding, they have a dynamic. Taylor hasnt got it, neither has the little brat Kaitlin!
I really hope the show dies soon, Greys Anatomy & Supernatural (which are much better shows) are surely going to kick it's ass anyway!

The oc is a great show. I have to admit it has gotten to be too much drama with Marissa but that is how life goes isn't it? I think it is pretty realistic most of the time. I think people are mad because that is not the way it should go after the third season but it could happen in real life..How many people have lost someone close to them and there was no happy ending? People get mad because the show is not portrayed as realistic and then when something realistic happens they say it is sad and wrong to do that. I can understand where Josh is coming from wanting to change the direction of the show because it was too full of drama but killing the main character I think was too drastic. Maybe in a later season but not this soon! We all came to love Marissa's character and whether you liked her or not or agreed w/ the things she did or not she still played it well and she always had a part of her that was caring and sincere. Whether or not the show can make it with out her remains to be seen. She personally was my favorite character!!!!
As for the other rumors she did not quit. Like the others said the writer verified that she was great and very professional till the end and that they just felt like the whole Ryan and Marissa story had gone as far as it could go so the best thing to do to change the direction of the show would be to kill her off. That was not Mischa's choice she just took the news as best she could and looked at the fact that now she would have more time for her movie career (she already has movies in the works). Also the reason the next two seasons were not as good is b/c Josh stated in the interview that he left the show to other writers and producers and now for the fourth season he is taking back control. NOW THAT WAS THE BIGGEST MISTAKE OF ALL I THINK b/c if he had not given the show to someone else and they had not written so much drama about Marissa they would not have felt like the show needed to take a diferent direction in the first place and would not have had to kill her off prematurely..
I think the whole thing is just sad! Thanks for listening to me rant. Mischa you rock and are great!!!!
Posted by: tanya at May 24, 2006 05:23 PM
I agree, it was waaay too premature to kill Marissa off. The end of the 3rd season? I thought ALL of them have 6 year contracts, and I don't think they can legally cut Mischa off before that.. however she can breach HER contract. I think sadly it was her decision. The producers know what a huge asset she was to the show. She is the draw on all young females. She's the face of Nutrogena, Keds, and now BEBE. She the All American Girl in our eyes that plays the messed up teen on The OC. We love her. Even if her character was annoying at times, you must admit EVERYONE watched because of her, and the chemistry between Ryan and Marissa. What's gonna happen to Ryan?
What is the intro to the show going to be like? No more Ryan and Marissa riding a bike or kissing on the ferris wheel?? :(

I found this
NEWSWEEK ARTICLE:
'Well, I was really excited that I get to die, to be honest,' the 20-year-old actress tells Newsweek magazine in an interview. 'I've done pretty much everything else with the character. It was better than one of those lame farewells.'
Although rumors flew in recent months that Barton was ready to leave the show, she says her departure was the producers' decision.
'But I really think it's best to do movies now,' says Barton, who co-stars with Hayden Christensen in 'Guilty Pleasures,' slated for release next year.
'I was also thinking of spending a month in London, living there and taking a course in acting,' she says. 'Sometimes it's nice to go back to your roots.'
Will she ever return to 'The O.C.' in a dream sequence?
'Oh, God. I hope not. That would be cheesy.'
Posted by: anne-marie at May 25, 2006 10:58 PM
hi i'm from Bulgaria but this is not so mean I'm sure that The OC without marissa will be diferent and very bad,and producers must TO BRING MARISSA BACK that is the righ decision beacuse people like marissa and if she wouldn't begin in four season it will be RUIN!!!!PRODUCERS must to think about that!!!!
Posted by: vladimir at May 28, 2006 09:51 AM
marissa is a very annoying scarily boring untalented ugly fake asslanky bitch who isnt a patch on the stunning TALENTED rachel bilson now the tramp is gone hopefully bilson will get the big storylines she deserves!
Posted by: orla at May 28, 2006 12:40 PM
ok,it sucks that marissa is dead, even though she was very annoying(crying all the time!)...but, if she's not around,i'm not sure how caitlin is gonna be the new focus, i mean, she's way younger, and it's not like she's great friends with seth, summer and ryan....so wtf?if they don't go to college, then what on earth are the writers gonna make up?oh well, i will still watch season 4, but its a damn shame that marissa ain't in it anymore!
Posted by: mich at May 29, 2006 02:20 AM
OOOOK. The show is going to be completely horrible if they try to make the center of attention Kaitlin. I love the show, and I will probably watch it even without Marissa next season, that is ONLY if Kaitlin isn't in it. I hate her, and I think the decision of having Kaitlin a main character is a whole hell of a lot worse than having Marissa killed.
Posted by: Brigid at June 4, 2006 03:18 PM
ok, i think we need to get over marissa.
The fact is that in season 1 the adults had way more storyline than they do now. kirsten has just become this doting housewife who dolls out advice, and sandy a boring buisnessman. it's getting really cliche. season 1 was awesome when kirsten was this un-stereotypical workaholic loaded mom who could not cook, and sandy was a public defender who earned next to nil. that was the whole point of the show! the fish out of water story, as kelly rowan put it. and in season 1, seth and sandy had JOKES! there has not been a good joke in ages. seriously!
Sandy and Kirsten really need to get more screen time, and maybe now that marissa is gone that may happen.

OHHHHHH mY GOD... I'M SON SHOking and so mad about marissa-.. i want her back... back to the O.C. this ain't good for us. i'm a big fan .. it's so traumatic..why..why marissa...whay..

BILSON CAN'T ACT. SHE'S HORRIBLE! KILL THE OC!!!
Posted by: Wilma at June 9, 2006 08:26 AM
I've adored Mischa ever since I saw her on the third season of 'Once and Again.' Up through that time, she was really a very good actor -- regardless of what a typical 'O.C.' episode might indicate. I've heard that she's moving to London, where she was born. I hope she hooks up with the right people, takes some classes, builds up monster acting chops, then comes back and wins an Oscar.

I cried when she died but only because of the music etc and I cry at almost every film so it means nothing.
I only started watching because of Adam Brody and to a lesser extent, Rachel Bilson. I hate the screwed up relationships in some shows, they're very tiring, but Summer/Seth's is just sweet!
