So, Doom, huh? By now, I’m sure a lot of you fine Ego-gents have given the reboot a thorough damn playing. You’ve blasted and glory-killed your way through waves of mutated lumpen red assholes. You’ve probably completed the campaign. Likely cruised off the beaten path to find a secret or two, fist-bumping awesome little Doomguy dolls as you go.
Now that you’ve got yourself some experience, then, and you’re up to your gonads in the shattered vertebra and sad bleeding fleshy husks of your foes, what did you think? The game didn’t please everyone, but the general opinion is of a brash, badass and brutal shooter, a lil’ brainless but a whole lot of fun. Think of it as an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie in video game form.
When it comes to the single player, you couldn’t really ask for more. It’s the multiplayer that a lot of gamers have found lacking; sparse options, cheaters, no private matches to avoid them, functionality from the alpha missing in the retail game, and the whole thing feeling a little generic. But id Software hear our bitching through the Internet, and they’re on the case.
Speaking to Eurogamer this week, id’s Marty Stratton, executive producer of Doom, promised that the team are working on these issues (hit the link for the full story).
"There's certainly no lack of commitment to Doom as a multiplayer game on our side," he says. "We are already working on private matches with custom game settings and expect to include that in a free update this summer. There were a few developer tools discovered in the alpha that we knew we would need to improve before releasing to consumers and… we are working on most of those updates now."
So there it is. Let’s hope this isn’t all talk. Now that Doom’s finally back, we want it to stick around awhile.
