When 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes came out, it surprised everyone by being a return to form for a series that had foundered since the 1970s. After Tim Burton's disastrous attempt at rebooting the franchise in 2001, most fans were apprehensive about more Apes movies, but this new prequel trilogy has been arguably the best thing to happen in Apes vs. Humans cinema since the 1968 original.

This summer, the trilogy comes to a close with War for the Planet of the Apes, and these final trailers make that film look every bit as epic as we hoped. The first new trailer above is anchored by the dulcet tones of original series star Chuck Heston as he quotes William Faulkner's 1950 Nobel Prize acceptance speech. It sets a rather dour tone for things, but I think that with the direction this series has been heading, it feels appropriately somber and, well, war-like.

And speaking of war-like, the extended trailer released this morning—which you can watch below—gives us a taste of the carnage to come. It's hard to call War for the Planet of the Apes anything but one of the year's most anticipated movies. The War begins on July 14.
