If the Two Worst Teams in the NFL Have QB Controversies, Does Anyone Care?

Michael Garcia - November 22, 2012

I already know the answer to that question. I care, because I already wrote about the Kansas City Chiefs situation a couple of times this season. I just find it kind of funny to see a team having to agonize over the prospect of whether they should start BradyQuinn or Matt Cassel. Not hard to see why the Chiefs are 1-9.

Now Jacksonville, also 1-9, has shut down Blaine Gabbert for the year because of injuries to his shoulder and forearm. That means ChadHenne will get the chance to win the job. Henne was going to start this week regardless, but It should be his job anyway. Henne nearly led the Jaguars to a road win in Houston last week with 354 yards and four touchdown passes. Meanwhile, Gabbert put together one of the worst statistical seasons in history last year as a rookie, and wasn't much better this season. In 10 games in 2012, Gabbert had 1,662 yards. Pathetic, really.

I'd be surprised if Gabbert ever starts a game again. His original contract was four guaranteed years with Jacksonville, so he'd be a serviceable backup I suppose. Not that it matters, but at least Henne gives the Jags a shot. He signed a two year deal when he arrived in Jacksonville, so he could potentially win the starting job for next if he plays well over the remainder of the season.

The Kansas City situation is much different in that neither Brady Quinn nor Matt Cassel should or will be starting for the Chiefs next season. KC is going to draft a quarterback, and with several good prospects in the upcoming draft, they should be able to find either Geno Smith, Matt Barkley, Tyler Wilson or Tyler Bray available in the top five. Pretty much any of those guys will be an upgrade and make Chiefs fans at least they have some hope in the future.
