For weeks the word has been that the BCS system is on its last legs. We've been led to believe that the powers behind college football had finally agreed on one thing--a playoff system was needed. The question was just what form the system would take.

It appears that question has been answered. The commissioners of the various conferences have tentatively agreed on a four-team playoff system to decide the national championship.

The plan will be for the top four teams to meet in a semi-final game that will be played at one of the traditional bowl games. The winners will then play for the national championship in a city that will be decided according to a bid system similar to how the NFL decides what city hosts the Super Bowl.

How the four teams would be selected has been a major topic of conversation. The one thing that could easily be agreed upon is that the polls and computer rankings would not be the deciding factor. There was some support for conference champions to be given preference, but it appears that there will be a selection committee similar to what basketball uses.

It is not a done deal just yet. The commissioners will still need to get the plan approved by the university presidents. A meeting has been scheduled to present it to BCS Presidential Oversight Committee on June 26.

One concern about a playoff system is that it would add too many games to the college season inevitably interfering with the education of the student athletes. With just one additional game being added to he post season slate it would be hard to see the university presidents not signing off on the plan.

Once they do, the hard part is going to be waiting two more years for the plan to be put into action.
