When Lucasfilm dumped a whole bunch of projects a few months back, the Boba Fett movie that was going to be written and directed by James Mangold was among the casualties. Thankfully it looks as if they’re going to be incorporating some of that awesomeness into Jon Favreau’s TV series The Mandalorian, but there’s a lot left on the table by abandoning the Boba Fett movie.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the Fett movie wouldn’t have just focused on everyone’s favorite bounty hunter, but rather would have been about the entire band of bounty hunters brought together by Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back. So, to recap, Boba Fett: The Movie would’ve been about Boba Fett and also would've been about IG-88 and Dengar and 4-LOM and Zuckuss and Bossk. Don’t get me wrong, I love all of those dudes—except Dengar, nobody likes Dengar—but they’re hardly who I’m buying a ticket to see in a movie titled Boba Fett or Fett: A Star Wars Story or whatever other stupid thing they’d have called it.
Granted, nobody wants each of those monsters to have their own movie or anything. No one’s paying money to see Dengar Begins. However, one of the biggest problems with Solo: A Star Wars Story was the lack of focus on the title character. It appears as if this was a common theme running through a lot of these early Disney/Lucasfilm solo outings. Hopefully their cancellation means they understand the problem and are working to fix it.
