Arizona Wildcats Win 2012 College World Series

Everything appeared to be working out for two-time defending champions South Carolina. They came in as a lower seed, but there is something to be said for the heart of a champion, and they made it to the College World Series finals for the third season in a row.

After losing Game One Sunday there was no quit in the Gamecocks, but they knew they had a hole to dig out of against a talented Wildcats team. In the end it proved to be too much. Arizona swept South Carolina in the best of three series with a 4-1 in Game Two in Omaha Monday night.

Arizona's starting pitcher James Farris pitched a great game, but was not able to come away with a win. In 7 2/3 innings he only allowed four base runners, two hits and two walks, and one run. South Carolina had held the Wildcats offense to just one run at that point in the game, so when Farris was pulled during the 8th inning he was stuck with a no-decision.

South Carolina's starting pitcher Michael Roth also pitched a strong game only allowing four base runners in 6 2/3 innings (three hits and one walk) and one earned run. It was his relief, Matt Price and Tyler Webb, that the Wildcats took advantage off by turning three hits and a walk into three runs in the 8th inning.

The Gamecocks made a game of it in the ninth. With one out in the ninth they had the bases loaded, but were unable to convert.

Outfielder Robert Refsnyder was named the CWS Most Outstanding Player.
