An Obi-Wan Kenobi 'Star Wars' Spinoff Film is Officially in the Works

If there's one thing that Star Wars prequel haters and defenders can agree upon, it's that Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan Kenobi was the best thing about all three of them. That fact alone should make news that an Obi-Wan spinoff film is officially in the works welcome by almost all of the galaxy's fans; after all, they're making these movies whether we want them to or not. Better to embrace the ones that have the potential to be good.

Late last week, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Disney and Lucasfilm were moving ahead on a solo film for Kenobi set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. Oscar nominated director Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliott) is in talks to write and direct the film, though everything is in the very early stages at the moment. So early, in fact, that Ewan McGregor has not even been approached yet about reprising what is arguably his most famous role.

Buried in the announcement is a line about other spin-off films being considered that should give all fans pause...

A Han Solo movie is now in the final stages of shooting under new director Ron Howard, and Lucasfilm is also considering pics centering on Yoda and bounty hunter Boba Fett, among other characters.

Don't get me wrong, I love Yoda, but please don't build a whole film around him. That's a terrible idea. Seriously, I'd rather watch a Wicket the Ewok solo movie. Yoda's a great supporting character, but putting him front and center will turn it into an SNL film. Yoda works in small doses. Don't screw things up anymore than you already have, please.
