I am way, way too scared to go skydiving. But I don't mind experiencing it through YouTube videos. Some clips make skydiving seem so peaceful and liberating...while others show what can go wrong. I think I'll stay right here on the ground.
POV Skydiving in the Nevada Desert
Short and sweet. Here's the entire basic skydiving experience: From jumping out of the airplane to guiding your parachute to the ground. Looks like flying. Seems like fun.
Skydiving Over New York City
Red Bull got special permission from the city to let skydivers in wingsuits glide over Lower Manhattan. You'll catch views of New Jersey and Brooklyn, too. If you ever wanted to feel like Superman, this video is for you.
Skydiving Over an Active Volcano
Maybe you're wondering, "But how can we make skydiving more dangerous?" GoPro found the answer: Gliding in a wingsuit over the active Villarrica stratovolcano in Chile. The bold pilot -- a woman! -- even drifts right through the sulfur-enfused smoke from the crater.
Double Malfunction and Parachute Collision
Here's where things start to go wrong. This video amazing footage of multiple failures while plummeting to Earth. Our POV skydiver's parachute cable gets twisted. As he's trying to fix it, another skydiver collides with it, twisting both their chutes to the point they're unusable. Eventually the skydiver releases it and deploys the emergency chute, and both men survived. But this could have been very bad.
Skydiver Has Seizure While Falling
Here's a frightening video -- what the skydiver himself called "the scariest moment of my life." He had a seizure at 9,000 feet, causing him to lose controls of his limbs and fall unconscious for at least 30 seconds. His coach noticed a problem, grabbed him, and pulled his ripcord at 4,000 feet. The skydiver woke up and was somehow able to land safely.
Skydiving Planes Collide in Mid-Air
This may be the most terrifying footage of all. Two planes were flying close so that the skydivers in both planes could jump in formation. But the planes collided, shattering one plane's windshield, causing an explosion, and sending it careening to the ground. The other plane suffered only slight damage and made it back to the runway. All the skydivers were wearing cameras, so you get to see this heart-stopping accident from multiple angles, including plane and its fiery parts plummeting to the ground. Everyone survived, and only two people had any injuries -- including the damaged plane's pilot, who leapt to safety with his own parachute. Here's the full story of the shocking incident.
