In case you were wondering, yes, there is a God.
The LA Times reported today that Harvey Weinstein has hired Brad Copeland to write a script for the a Knight Rider movie based on the 80s TV show about a cop and his talking Pontiac Trans-Am. There's no word yet as to who will star in the film, but whoever it is will surely have a tough time filling the shoes of America's gift to Germany, David Hasselhoff.
Of course, some serious work will need to be done to make the Knight Rider concept work. Back in the early 1980s, when people still used things like telephone books, encyclopedias, travel agents, and fold up maps, a talking car that could assist a badass cop in performing his badass cop-type duties was high tech fantasy. These days there's nothing the original KITT could do that Siri can't—except maybe drive you from point A to point B.
Let us hope, therefore, that Weinstein and Copeland opt for a tongue-in-cheek sendup along the lines of Starsky and Hutch and 21 Jump Street rather than something that strives to be faithful to the original. After all, no one has ever taken anything David Hasselhoff has done seriously before. Why should they start now?
