The folks behind Assassin’s Creed III are treating the Tyranny of King George Washington downloadable content pack like it’s an entirely new game; a sort of semi-sequel to October’s blockbuster. In this re-imagining of the already re-imagined story of half British half Native American hero Connor, George Washington has become precisely what his fellow Founder feared most: a tyrannical monarch. In the DLC pack things are so intense Connor isn’t even Connor anymore, taking to this adventure under his original Mohawk name, Ratonhnhaketon. That name is so serious and unpronounceable that you won’t even miss the accents and colon that are supposed to be in there.
To give you some historical context here, the American experience is still unique in that not one President has ever succumbed to the seduction that comes with all of the power they’re given. Despite what you’d hear some of their opponents say throughout history and especially today, American presidents, even at their most despotic and imperialistic worst, have never come close to kind of iron-fisted regressive rulers we’ve seen throughout history. The US has been held back when her presidents have been incompetent not tyrannical. This is precisely what the Founders were trying to set up and the traditions George Washington, who was very mindful of the foundation he was building for following generations, established has guided every President since. At a time when his counterparts around the world were seizing power as wartime leaders, Franklin Roosevelt could’ve easily done the same instead of continuing to subject himself to free and open elections.
America is unique in that our Head of State (who positions the nation in the world) and Head of Government (who runs things domestically) are the same person, so the first US President could have easily become a monarch. The legacy of the Founders and Washington, in particular, is that at a crucial moment in history a group of very smart people were given an opportunity to do something remarkable if they could just make a few correct decisions.
Expect the Tyranny of King George Washington DLC to be an eye opening look at what could’ve been.
