People think it’s easy to make a spoof movie. Like, all you have to do is throw a bunch of random shit in a bowl, mix it up with some topical references and pour it out onto 35mm film strip and you’ll make people laugh. Anyone who’s seen Epic Movie or Meet the Spartans knows that this isn’t true. And anyone who’s seen the newly released Scary Movie 5 trailer (which you can watch below) definitely knows that. The best kind of spoof movie is the one that finds a way to remain amusing beyond an expiration date. Yes, we all love Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult, but unless you grew up in the early 90s, there are far too many references and in-jokes you won’t get–one of the many reasons why Date Movie, Epic Movie, Disaster Movie, Meet the Spartans, and so on and so forth, will never be rewatched, because their shelf life is barely past the opening weekend with all the topical references made. (Let’s not even mention that they’re also atrociously unfunny regardless of their topicality).
No, the best spoofs are the ones that are smart enough to focus on one popular genre. Loaded Weapon 1 were the Shane Black-esque 80s action movies. Austin Powers was the spy genre. Naked Gun was gumshoe police procedurals. And that’s why people still annoying quote ‘Don’t call me Shirley’ thirty-two years after Airplane was released.
