Guillermo Del Toro famously left his passion project--an adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness, which would've starred Tom Cruise and produced with James Cameron--when studios wouldn't budge on the $150 million price tag and R-rating and signed up for an homage to Japanese kaiju films like Godzilla, Godzilla vs Mothra, and most famously Godzilla vs Kramer vs Kramer. Well, the first trailer for that movie, Pacific Rim has appeared and it certainly looks...expensive.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, start rising from the sea, a war begins that takes millions of lives and consumes humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon is devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers prove nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes - a washed up former pilot and an untested trainee - who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Starring Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi and for some reason Charlie Day, Pacific Rim opens July 12, 2013.
