Last week's picks were a disappointing 3-5. That I can live with. But something else popped into my head this morning and that was this post that I put up back in July. After watching Cam Newton carve up defenses for the most part last season, I figured he would improve and make the Panthers a legit contender for the playoffs. They aren't, but it's kind of hard to say that it's all on Newton, especially once you break down his stats from last year compared to this season.
As a rookie, he completed 60 percent of his passes. So far this year he's at 57.5 percent. Newton threw for 4,051 yards and 21 TDs last season. Right now through 12 games, he's at 2,933 yards and 14 TDs, which is on pace for nearly the same totals, especially if he plays the rest of the schedule like he has the last couple of games. Newton also ran for 706 yards, a rookie QB record that was just broken by Robert Griffin III, and so far this year Newton has 524 yards. He needs to average only 50 a game to beat that total. So maybe it's not all Newton's fault in Carolina, and maybe he's not in a sophomore slump, but they've regressed as a team overall.
