San Francisco’s Present and Future Look Bright After Pummeling the Bears
The San Francisco 49ers mauled the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football 32-7, but the biggest story to come out of that game is that the Niners are now in the midst of a legit quarterback controversy. Second year pro Colin Kaepernick filled in for the concussed Alex Smith and looked like a guy who is ready to lead a team. Kaepernick looked so good, there was already chatter immediately after the game that he should keep starting.
Not that SF coach Jim Harbaugh minds, in fact when he was asked who would start the next game, Harbaugh said they'd go with the hot hand. He couched it by saying both QBs are hot, but come on, we can all read between those lines. San Francisco has never been that in love with Smith. After all, they went after Peyton Manning in the offseason and let Smith talk to other teams.
Chicago was just overwhelmed from the get-go, as the Niners just scored at will in the beginning of the game. The Bears desperately missed Jay Cutler, also out with a concussion, but the way their defense played it might not have mattered much if Cutler was playing.
Jason Campbell started for Chicago and only managed 107 yards in the air with one TD and two picks. The running game wasn't much help either, though Matt Forte had 63 yards, nobody else did anything. The Bears are hopeful that Cutler will return this week when they host Minnesota. The Niners, most likely with Kaepernick at QB, travel to New Orleans to clash with the Saints.
