Alfred Morris of the Redskins is Still Driving His 1991 Mazda to Work
Alfred Morris of the Washington Redskins is quickly becoming the team's other breakout star rookie. Morris rushed for 96 yards and two TDs in week one, and 89 yards this past Sunday. He's got a stranglehold on being the 'Skins feature back. To his credit, Morris isn't rushing out to start spending his possible future earnings. The rookie out of Florida Atlantic is still driving the 1991 Mazda 626 he got his junior year at FAU.
Morris told The Redskins Blog that the ride has sentimental value now.
That's a great attitude to have.
Drafted in the sixth round in April, Morris signed a 4-year contract worth $2.223 million. It's also an NFL contract, and a rookie's to boot, so most likely only a fraction is guaranteed.
Morris not only taught himself to drive the stick shift, but also drove it from South Florida up to D.C. to start his new job. He says when he first got it, he did catch some heat from his friends, but he had wanted a car for so long he wasn't going to turn it down.
If he keeps playing the way he has through the first two weeks, he'll be able to afford the real thing in no time. Question is, would he actually want one? He seems pretty content with what he has. Someone else could have used that kind of financial advice.
