‘Newsroom’ Arrived With a Whimper, Not A Bang. Here Are 5 Other Shows We Expected To Rock That Only Disappointed Us

I always used to think that Aaron Sorkin possessed some king of magical pen. One that helped him to weave his uniquely magical tapestry of drama and comedy that has enchanted viewers for years and that he probably had to give up his right ball for.

Just look at his success rate over the years. Sports Night, The West Wing, A Few Good Men, The Social Network and Moneyball have each achieved notoriety amongst critics and fans alike because of how good they are.

But it all isn’t going too well for A.S at the moment. His new show, The Newsroom, has just finished it’s run on HBO and has been universally panned by anyone who has had the great displeasure of laying their eyes on it.

It has everything you don’t want in a show. It’s pretentious, smug and filled with annoying characters and has been a huge disappointment to those of us who couldn’t wait for it be on our screens just a few short weeks ago.

Now The Newsroom will join these other TV disasters that were met with only lukewarm reviews when they were expected to send audiences to orgasmic levels of TV watching pleasure.

The Marriage Ref – On the face of it, this was always going to be a disaster. I mean, who wants to watch celebrities help real-life couples settle their marital disputes? But with Jerry Seinfeld’s name attached to it and A-list guests like Madonna, Ricky Gervais and Larry David set to help out these warring spouses maybe it would succeed after all? How wrong we were.

Joey – Come on, Joey was the funniest on the Friends, right? Oh, actually he’s just rather annoying without the good looks of Jennifer Aniston and Courtney Cox distracting us. And don’t get me started on his family.

The Event - Every week, America was left on tenterhooks over what the eponymous event would consist of. Right up until we all just got really bored and started to check out what else was on. Turns out he had something to do with aliens.

Lucky Louie – Don’t get me wrong, Louis CK has proven to us all that he is a writing genius with FX’s Louie. But his first attempt was met with a mixture of confusion and anger, as he looked to do an updated version of The Honeymooners. He is still one funny bastard though.

Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip – Maybe we shouldn’t have been so surprised at Sorkin’s ineptitude. Studio 60 looked to show us the ins and outs of writing a comedy show, but was just really up itself. Give me 30 Rock any day of the week.
