What ‘Total Recall’ Could’ve Learned from the Original
The Colin Farrell-starring Total Recall remake opened over the weekend to pretty tepid box office returns and an even more lukewarm response from critics. Reviews were pretty vitriolic and used as many puns about missing your memory as humanly possible (the gold medal goes to Peter Travers with, 'It's two hours you'll never get back and every minute is a bad memory.').
Part of the problem was that it was missing a lot of the fun and campiness from the original (plus, you know, that whole Mars thing). The gratuitous violence and bombastic action scenes were all over-the-top and ridiculous, but it's what made that movie so memorable and why people still quote it over twenty years later. If you could fault The Dark Knight for anything, it's that it spawned a boatload of filmmakers who think in order to make a genre film it has to be grim and dark and the 2012 Total Recall forgets to have fun.
There were a few in-jokes and easter eggs in the new film that paid homage to the 1990-version (thank God 'two weeks' made it in the final cut), but check out the gallery to see five elements from the original, Len Wiseman should've remembered to include in his version.
